Advantages of an On-Site Installation Truck

Geotechnical instruments play a vital role in the continual success and productivity in structural monitoring. A quality instrument installation is a necessary step within the implementation process.

Using various years of installation experience, Canary Systems has thoughtfully designed and constructed a piezometer installation reel truck that aims to streamline the overall instrumentation process and functionality for use cases including tailings dams, construction sites, monitoring wells, among others.

Below are the many benefits of how an on-site installation truck and related services can greatly benefit the instrumentation portion of a monitoring project:

Integrated Planning and Execution

Initial steps include a predetermined number of piezometers based on borehole depth, size, location, and relativity.

For a typical piezometer installation, Canary Systems will first gather the zero reading of each instrument. Once the truck is positioned next to the drill hole, the deepest piezometer is taped to a ½” fiberglass rod. Utilizing the fiberglass rod allows for installation of sensors in any orientation. The rod is pushed down the hole using a dual hydraulic motor tractor belt drive and additional piezometers are added at predetermined distances from the other instruments for a nested installation.

Efficient Installation Time and Processing

A primary benefit of the piezometer truck is the provided ability to simplify the overall process and installation in a convenient and consistent method by dispensing multiple sensors together for measurements at varying depths within the same borehole.

One of the most innovative features of the truck is the guide arm system for the fiberglass rod, allowing for installations in boreholes that are particularly longer in depth. The guide arm is designed to maintain full control of the fiberglass rod as it enters the hole, eliminating the need for any attachments to the drill rig and potential breakage of the rod. The piezometers are also fed along the guide arm and meet up with the rod at the top of the hole for a seamless transition entering the casing and keeping aligned through the process for accurate instrument placement.

The installation truck permits for more effective installations of piezometers with the mounted guide arm providing for a safer and more controlled feed of the fiberglass rod and instrument cables into the hole.

Depending on the standard hole size and final installation depth, between 1 and 8 sensors may be installed at once, maximizing overall efficiency and overall rate at which the piezometers are installed.

Consistent Quality through Expert Knowledge

Canary Systems’ knowledgeable team of technicians and engineers are readily available to assist with every step of the process, including post-installation.

Once the installation portion is complete, the sensors are then integrated for data collection. Canary Systems has developed several of their own systems such as the MLRemote®, MLTDR, MLDAQ, and WRMT, to provide the necessary data logging and telemetry for the installed sensors.
